Hi Everyone!Wow, we had quite a day! We started
out this morning anchored at Treasure Point on Norman Island where the water was
absolutely stunning and there was a tallship anchored just off our stern. As we
pulled anchor at around 7am and headed out of the
anchorage we hoisted the mainsail under ideal conditions… a brilliantly blue sky
with a fresh breeze of about 10-12 knots right out of the East… a beam reach all
the way to Tortola, it doesn’t
get much better than that!

Halfway across we started hearing
people on the radio trying to flag down the ‘Canadian Warships’ outside of
Road Harbour… Canadian
Warships outside of Road Harbour?? What the
heck were Warships doing in the BVI’s let alone Canadian ones!
Sure enough on the horizon there
were some large grey structures moving slowly across the South side of
Tortola. We saw
Warships 700 and 704 pull into Road Harbour and tie up
to the cruise ship dock, just as we pulled alongside Warship 707 which had been
waiting at the entrance for her queue to enter the harbour. She started
underway and the two of us made our way straight into Road Harbour side by
side with the all hands of 707 on deck in full uniform, it was quite a
spectacular sight early in the morning with the sun still low on the horizon.

We had to stop shortly after to
lower our sails before we could go any further into the harbour so we watched as
707 slid by and proceeded to raft up with the other 2 ships already at the
dock. As we passed by them on our way into the anchorage we gave them all a
couple ‘toots’ of our signal horn and got a big round of waves from our fellow
Canadians… very cool!

It wasn’t long after we set our
anchor the ships had their dinghies in the water… I was downstairs working on
the computer when I heard “Hello fellow Canadians!” from outside the boat. We
stuck our heads out and sure enough, there were 2 of the Warship dinghies with
smiling crews waving at us! Turns out there are quite a few sailors from
Newfoundland onboard and when they saw our brand new Newfoundland flag flying on
‘Sophisticated Lady’ they just had to come over and say hi! We chatted for
quite a while as they asked us about our travels aboard ‘Sophisticated Lady’
having sailed her all the way from Canada as well. Looks like
they’ll be in port for a few days so they even invited us to come by the ship
for a few beers… hard to pass up an offer like that! We’re supposed to be
heading to the US Virgin Islands today but may just have to adjust our schedule,
lol. Oh well, such is life aboard a sailboat… have to be
flexible!
Cheers, Rick & Terri ‘Sophisticated
Lady’
