The night of April 13th was a full moon, in the islands this is cause for a celebration and we were excited to be in Trellis Bay for the famous full moon party!  The music started drifting out to our sailboat around 8pm and we were drawn to shore.  The beach and tiny shops along Trellis Bay beach were packed with people of every age, dancing, strolling, eating, singing and drinking.  The reggae band was loud and the tunes made you want to jump up and boogie!   We wandered around taking it all in being swept along with the music and the enchantment of the full moon spirit.

This was an artists community and giant pieces of art became wonderful spectacles of light and magic.  Everyone around us was happy and loving the music, island foods and cool drinks.  The moon hung huge over the anchorage and lit up all the gently floating sailboats.  Their mast lights twinkled like stars under the moon and the waves lapped on the shore.

The BVI Sky Dancers

All of a sudden these giant brightly colored dancers appeared in front of the band.  They were 12 feet tall and moving all through the crowd dancing on huge stilts.  We all stood in awe as they seemed to defy gravity and moved with incredible grace and agility, even in the sand!  The kids ran under and through their legs and the adults laughed and snapped pictures.  It was an incredible sight to see!

The Sky Dancers by the flaming ball

All of a sudden just off the beach were huge flames leaping into the air.  The sculptured metal balls filled with wood had been lit and filled the night with flames and enchantment.

The figures wrought in iron seemed to come to life in the flames and the water.  The heat could be felt on the beach as we all stood and cheered.  It smelled of camp fires and endless summer nights.

"Celebrating under the watchful moon"

It was a great night to dance, people watch, play and fall under the moon's spell.  It made you wonder why everyone, everywhere doesn't celebrate every full moon with joy and abandon.

Cheers,
